Major Improvements are not bought, they are built. Although the german text doesnt say so, i think we should add a clarification that you dont have to pay the usual building cost, just the Food. Else it is not clear enough i think. Major Improvements are not bought, they are built. Does this indicate that both improvements and occupations are thrown out? If so, does that mean "only what is thrown out is what has been unplayed?" You discard your entire hand, which means all cards in your hand at that moment. So that includes all unplayed improvements and occupations. It does not affect cards that you already played cause they are in front of you, not in your hand anymore. You discard your entire hand, which means all cards in your hand at that moment. This strikes me as rather recklessly overpowered. You can easily play a few strong cards, then pitch the rest for e.g. a Well and Stone Oven, coasting on those the rest of the game while focusing on growth, pastures, animals, and fields.
