German speaker, how do i translate this name? German speaker, how do i translate this name? | chris Oct 30, 2010 10:56am [quote] |

If the German word is anything like the Dutch one, it means "someone who stays somewhere for the winter, waiting for the summer to travel onwards/back". I'm 99% sure it refers to the explorer Willem Barentsz, who famously overwintered (it's a real English word, says the Oxford English Dictionary) on Nova Zembla. Overwinterer would be my choice of translation. Winterer may be an alternative.
